  1. I'm in the same boat, Road Cinturatos are just brilliant for longevity and puncture resistance, the problem is once they go they go. Current set has 13k km on them and are overdue for replacement, but I'm squeezing every last km out of them as I just cannot afford new tires right now. I also enjoy the current set for my dark morning rides as they have a reflective strip around the circumferance. I've toyed with the idea of getting something with less rolling resistance but havent bit the buller on anything yet. So I'm watching this thread with interest.
  2. I did something like this during Covid lockdown. Added a speed sensor to my bike and tried a few Zwift rides. the biggest issue for me was that without the dynamic resistance changes to the trainer, when you hit a hill you simply fly past everyone else. I did a couple of sessions and then just reverted to watching cycling videos on the laptop whilst riding.
  3. I see your point, but need to add, this was at a car dealership and a few things 1) it was before most people arrive, even customers 2) in the 4 years I was there, we only had one customer that ever used it when she brought her car for a service, so most of the time it was empty but point taken
  4. I used to ride slower, and then also carry a few basic toiletries with me. get to work a little earlier than everyone else, use the paraplegic bathroom as its normally bigger and not in use. Do a basin wash and get changed into work gear. The ride home I coudl then give it some stick and work up a real sweat. currently my commute to work is about 15 steps, just a pity I've got to pile the kids into the car and do a 30km round trip to drop them at school first.
  5. right, so nearly 2 years later (just short of a few months), the new battery is not happy in the cold. I havent measured exactly, but based on the timing of my last 2 rides I'd estimate around 3 hours of operation. Not ideal, will have to source another battery. And since my 6 year old headlight battery has also decided that this cold snap is to cold to work in, I need to get a replacement for that too. Will source both from RS components.
  6. @Frosty should be able to help. I only know of Albion, but there must be many more.
  7. for sure. it can be clearly seen in the alcohol and cigarete trade. Volvo cars used to (might still do) sell a breathalyser for their cars, but few people want that restriction. I'm in the telematics space for Fleets, and installing cameras in trucks often becomes a union issue. But the AI in these cameras has become something else, able to pick up not just distractions, but it can tell you if the driver is smoking, on the phone, having a passenger in the cab, etc.
  8. I wont say I'm against it, just for me, it would be to much phaff. I've been using squirt lube for a number of years now. Once a week (or every 200 - 300 odd km) I simply run the chain through a cloth, add a drop of squirt per link and I'm good to go. Less than 5 minutes from taking the bike out the garage, mounting it on the stand in the workshop, doing the wipe and lube and putting it back in the garage. I'm averaging around 15 000km per chain over the last 4 chains, so longevity is not an issue. Am I losing watts, probably. But then I'm probably losing more watts through other things like my tyres. if Squirts hot wax is anything like their lube, they will have a good product. Their lube is well regarded world wide and I often see it pop up in international youtube vids.
  9. I would take it a step further and include a breathalyser immobiliser on vehicles. Blow over the limit and the car wont start.
  10. it would not bother me so much, and I'd be happy to let people ride what they want, it means cheaper 29" on the used market. But The shops are quick to stop stocking the older parts and only stock the latest and greatest, which make owning a older gen bike that little bit more difficult to maintain
  11. its not a good thing for our reputation, but it does not give anyone the right to aim their 2 ton weapon at us. Just the same as I dont have the right to aim a shotgun at the poophols revving the pistons out of their superbikes at the traffic light near my house at 2am.
  12. popped up in my feed to
  13. I do not know as I dont own such a device, but I have read in a few places that putting it in peleton mode is what you need to do to reduce the brightness when riding in groups.
  14. I was saying to someone the other day, at 15 I used to jump on my bike alone every day, ride through 3 different suburbs delivering news papers, and for as long as I can remember, the years before that were spent riding around the suburb on my bike. But right now, even though I live in a cul-de-sac, I wont let my 15 year old daughter ride her bike in our street without me watching.
  15. could not agree more. my daughters previous school built a MTB track, but still no bike racks for the kids to commute, to dangerous. The current school also has no facilities for commuting by bicycle, heck, you dont even see the hordes of teenagers on motorbikes going to schools anymore. Some of the cycling behaviour that irritates motorists is us cyclists mitigating the risks, making sure we get seen, or safely getting away/past a danger area in a way that does not align with the laws. Hell I'm awake at 3:30am in the morning in order to get out there before the roads get to busy, swapping the risk of traffic for the risk of poor visibility. Solly's article summed it up very well, getting your drivers license should not be about being able to memorise the k53, it should teach about road use, your responsibilities, your social contract when you get behind the wheel, etc. , but most importantly there needs to be a huge drive towards respect to other road users (be that fellow motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, recycling collectors etc.)
  16. please please please if he rides in a bunch in the dark hours, show him how to put it in peleton mode. yesterday morning had 2 fellow cyclists with radar lights in our bunch, it so happened that when we hit a perticularly dodgy peace of road that often gets potholes, they both landed up infront of me and at the same time a car approached from behind. I could have done with a welding helmet to stop the blinding light, and had to ride by faith
  17. everyone else has said what needs to be said to this reply of yours, i will not comment further as you have a history of having an anti cyclist tone to your posts on the hub.
  18. you are victim blaming
  19. something I saw an FB and modified for SA use. it might not solve the problem, but if it gets through to a handful of people then job done
  20. I bought a pair of these towards the end of last year. Then could not understand why my hands were getting sore on the bike, thought something had moved, tried a few things, then decided to try my winter gloves that have no padding, pain was gone. I'm now back to wearing my torn Vye Cycling gloves and the Ciovita's have gone into backup storage. Something about the padding obviously does not work with my hands and my position on the bike.
  21. what really makes me mad is seeing the comments when these incidents occur. People are chops. I awlays tell myself not to look and engage, but am often sucked in. The only comfort is that most of these chops are braver behind the keyboard than IRL. Would love to get everyone, that makes a comment blaming the cyclist , onto a bike and riding the streets under everyday conditions, they will soon change their minds.
  22. Also had a very close shave this morning on the way home from our ride. It was just before dawn, so 1000 lumens shining out front, bright flashing red light out back, keeping far left minding my own business, when this @#$@# in an Audi thought he would try and shave the hairs on my right arm with his left wing mirror. Same reaction as you, some very choice expletives, plus me waving my hand in front of my front light to make it flash, hoping he would stop so I could educate him boksburg style.
  23. Would love to do these tests, purely out of curiosity. having never measured my power, a few weeks back our LBS had a fun evening where they had a wahoo bike setup and a friendly contest to see who had the best 1 min w/kg, so I went for it. surprisingly my 1min power was pretty decent amongst us local riders, but would love to see what a proper ftp test will show because I was fading pretty quickly near the end of that 1 min.
  24. Happy to report that after yesterdays sun and some more bicarbonate the stench is back down to normal levels. Will give them a wash on Sunday anyway as I’m not riding Monday, so they’ll have a good amount of time to dry.
  25. Lol i see they turned off comments on their instagram post after they were bombarded with people complaining it’s the same weekend as DC.
